Earth Day Scholarship Awarded to Dutch Fork High School Senior

Columbia, SC—Robert Daniel Lowman, a senior Honor Roll Student at Dutch Fork High School, is the recipient of the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District’s (RSWCD’s) 2012 Earth Day Scholarship. The $500 scholarship will help Lowman pursue his education at Clemson University this fall.

An outstanding student, athlete, role model, and leader, Lowman plays Varsity soccer and football, mentors and tutors other students, is active in his church youth group, and excels in advanced academic courses. He was named Varsity Team Football Captain in 2011 and Varsity Team Soccer Captain in 2012. Lowman is also dedicated to conservation: “I believe the Earth is a wonderful gift to us all, and I want it to stay beautiful for others to enjoy for years to come,” he wrote in his scholarship application essay. “I am a huge believer that each person can make a big difference,” and “I can see that my words and actions encourage others to think about the environment and how we can take better care of our planet.”

Through the Earth Day Scholarship Program, the RSWCD seeks to recognize and celebrate students who have a demonstrated interest in natural resources, conservation, and/or the environment. “Education is a vital part of our mission and purpose, and the RSWCD takes great pride in our County’s young scholars,” said Jeff Laney, Associate Commissioner for the RSWCD.

Lowman will be recognized at the RSWCD’s Conservation Banquet in May.
